Emigre magazine
Emigre magazine ran from 1984 till 2004 and was quintessentially a typography based magazine. The editors and founders wanted to complicate the question of modernism and postmodernism. Octavia and Emigre had different ascetics.
Emigre became a landmark publication with in the graphic design world as it was doing something completely different with type.
The founders dutch born Rudy VanderLans and Czech born Zuzana Licko. They named it Emigre as they both came from different countries and they used design in a political this word represent that in the right way.
The original intention for them was to focus on the liminality. At the same time of the magazine's first publication there was a technology boost and the Apple Macintosh was created and sold.
Emigre used this to their advances the quirks and possibilities of software to produce new innovative design language.
They became a digital type foundry.
They sold many typefaces developed for the magazine.
Critics of theres included Massimo Vignelli Stephen Heller and David Carson.
Viginelli - “its a national calamity and an aberration of culture.”
Heller - “it is a blip in continuum and cult of ugly”
Carson- “it was too readily identifiable and therefore unusable.”
Beach culture magazine published an issue with a cover line that boasted no emigre fonts although the logo itself was set in licks senator.
Emigre worked a lot with other designers such as ray gun, joint venture, designers Republic and others.
The magazine is distinctive with playing a political debate by focusing on the formal design issues such as: type and composition.
The technology advances at that time affected the page design with represented the political and social shifts in art culture and mass communication.
They made their mark with a post war design ethic, righteous form that was built on rationalism
minimalism and modernism.
Emigre was distinctive for monotony of interrelation style, they tried to challenge the modernist status quo.
They also published things in cd format and other digital ways and even went into emigre music publishing.
Octavia magazine ran with Emigre.
First Design journal wanted to describe a need for change within design. Octavia had a similar agenda to them, but had a stronger modernist influence.
Octavia design layouts were resolved scale mock ups, using dummy typesetting acetate paint..
Trying to get as close as possible to the look of the final work printed.
They had an influence on the record industry by being associated with factory records and help to produced work for the artists.
